If I am looking to do a little shopping – I visit I want I got or Redflagdeals

If I am looking for something to do in the city – I visit – Now Magazine, Toronto, blogto and Torontoist.com

If I am looking for health-related info I visit – Healthboards

If I am looking for a new band – I visit The Hype Machine

If I am looking for advice on practically anything – I ask Twitter or Facebook.

Honestly, I cannot go anywhere without Googling it first or asking for other’s recommendations.

It’s a habit – and it’s not always a good one – I know that because of this habit I have there are many places in the city that I will never ever go to. Take the Sultan’s Tent for example - I have never been but have thought the concept was a neat idea - but have read horrible reviews and therefore will never go same goes for Sushi Train - never will go there either. Also places that don’t have an online presence – forget about it – unless I randomly stumble upon it – or have a friend recommend it – I will never go.

I know it really limits my experience, and well everyone has to go to that crappy restaurant and well, see for themselves first hand. But I’d rather not – I’d rather go off other people’s recommendations and not have to waste time and money on an experience that I would not be happy with. Does this limit me? Am I missing out on a lot of hidden gems? Probably - so If I am, tell me about them! =)

SIDE NOTE - If someone had told me that the Paranormal Show playing now at the Diesel playhouse was as horrible as it was – I certainly would not have paid the $40 I did and wasted 2 hours of my life – I thank Breakfast Television for that recommendation! - now there’s a recommendation from me - Don’t see it - well unless you want to A) get called up on stage ( I did) B) Be up on stage and still not be shocked (YUP!) C) Be part of an audience where the highlight of the show is guessing who has the “black ball” in their hand and who has the “white ball” very exciting - if you were in kindergarten - harsh words? yup. it was just that bad.

Anyone else face a similar problem? Is it even a problem?

Kudos – to this guy – for the inspiration behind this post

Although I have been on Twitter for a bit now, I never understood it, never even really used it. It all changed this week and now I have come to appreciate it. I always thought it was a silly application where I would log in and see that @fredsmith was sitting in a cafe drinking his favourite latte or @sallysmith was going to her grandmother’s 80th birthday. It seemed very boring and well I never saw the value of it.

Needless to say, this week I needed a favour - posted it and received a solution in a matter of 5 minutes,( Thanks again Sameer!) so I poked around and actually paid attention to some conversations, and Boom! Found out for myself that Twitter was actually useful!

That being said, here are some of the functionalities I have found in my short time in the Twitter world ( I’m so new I don’t even know the proper terminology)

1) Pose Questions - Get Answers

Unsure of something? Need to survey a group of people in a limited time. Need more insight into that last minute paper you are writing? Pose the question and receive feedback - immediately.

2) Connect, Connect, Connect!

Okay, we already have facebook, we have linkedin, email and telephone. We are already an uber-connected world, how the heck can twitter help? Twitter is instantaneous. It’s public and you can get a variety of interesting perspectives in a short amount of time - cost free and timely - best keywords around.

3) Need Advice?

Looking for advice on whether to buy a Mac or a PC? Need to know the name of a catchy song on a new commercial? Pose the question and I will assure you, you will get the answers you are looking for, in real time for reputable people.

4) Conference & Event Updates

Live in a Remote location? Or just hung up at the office? Rest aside, there’s the super handy Twitter again - It has the ability to get numerous people online, insta-blogging from their location right to your bedroom, office wherever you are online. Broke? Well you never have to justify the ridiculous conference fees ever again!….. Well, I step back. It’s probably not the same as attending the events life as you miss out on real-life human interaction, but it’s damn close and well pratical too!

For more information.. I found this article written by DoshDosh with 17 more ways to use twitter - so please enjoy!

Nevertheless - I have the Twitter bug. They got me. find me @chrissychrzan
